Comment by the chief of the judging committee |
■Comment by Prof. Tomohiro Fukuda, Chief of CPWC Executive Committee
CPWC (Crowd Programming World Cup) is a competition to seek a new possibility
of VR software, and the 5th competition was already held this year. Participants
of this contest combine their young ideas and compete their application
development based on the development kit for UC-win/Road and VR-Cloud of
Forum8.
When cherry blossoms started to bloom, application to the competition began
on the theme of "Your way of thinking is a path to undiscovered treasure".
We received 27 project plans, the largest number ever, from six countries:
Singapore, Taiwan, Australia, China, Korea, and Japan. In July, we had
a selection meeting at the MIT in Boston. Each and every work was given
feedbacks that have room for improvement towards the submission date in
October. Nine works were handed in before the nomination selection. Juries
evaluated each work on the basis of evaluation items of idea, possibility
of practical use, programming ability, presentation, and perfection level.
Eight works made advance to the final presentation. On 16 November, each
team did a final presentation for two minutes, and the juries on stage
voted for the first and second place via the VR-Cloud system.
"Car that Knows Before You Do via Deep Learning" by VAGIES (Koomin
University, Korea) that won the prestigious Grand Prix is a work aiming
to enhance the ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System). Predicting maneuvers
beforehand can alert drivers in advance so that they can have more time
to avoid or prepare for the danger. For this purpose, they equip a simulator
with cameras, eye and head trackers, and CAN interface. They develop a
sensory-fusion deep learning architecture which jointly learns to predict
and fuse multiple sensory streams learn the model and integrate it with
simulation software. The quality and the perfection level of the proposal
were by far the best, and all juries evaluated as the first place at the
final judgment.
The followings are the works that got the Judge's Special Prize.
- The Environment Design and IT Award was given to "Embrace the epoch
of automatic driving" by ITSCer (Wuhan University of Technology, China).
A self-driving SDK is added to the UC-win/Road real vehicle simulator.
SDK outputs the surrounding environment information, then achieves the
vehicle longitudinal and lateral self-control by controller. That allows
drivers to switch manual driving and automatic driving.
- "Optimization of Market Layout Based on Customer Behaviors" by
Seven Dwarfs (Shanghai University, China) won the Best Optimization Award.
This program aims to optimize market layout to improve revenue by lengthening
shopping distance. The Kinect application collect actions of customers,
and the data is transmitted to and recorded in the UC-win/Road Plug-in.
- "AugReal" by Penguin Gakuen (Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China)
graced the UX Award. This is a trial to connect a VR environment and user's
smartphone by AR. when users hold their smartphones over markers set in
a VR space of UC-win/Road, new AR 3D models such as buildig are displayed
on the smartphone. The models appeared on smartphone can be operated.
- "The Electronic Toll Gate of Urban Road" by 666 (Beijing University
of Civil Engineering and Architecture, China) won the Traffic and City
System Award. They developed a plug-in which can operate automatic charge
when identify the vehicle electronic tag in order to realize the ERP (Electronic
Road Pricing) system installed in cities in the purpose of the Transport
Demand and Management. Every vehicle will be charged automatically by different
standards and be counted as well.
Record-high 27 work plans were submitted to the CPWC of this year, but
only nine teams could complete their works. I think this shows the difficulty
of making up a system. On this point, I want to pay respect for eight teams
having made advance to the final presentation. I look forward to receiving
many more works from around the world next year. In addition, many teams
were not able to convey the selling point of their own developed system
enough in comprehensible way at the final presentation. I also hope that
they continue to make efforts and improve their skill.

Judging
Standard
|
|
|
The objective of the competition is to develop
software that can run on VR-Cloud® using UC-win/Road SDK
(Software Development Kit) and VR-Cloud® SDK. This
software could be: all-purpose software, application
programs, engineering software, business software or
game software. Competing students are asked to submit a
set of source codes of the software they used and a
Power Point slide that gives an explanation on the
source codes. The work will be evaluated on how well SDK
was used in the creation of the cloud software from the
aspect of programming quality, rationality,
technicality, aesthetics, originality, and how well it
is presented.
