On November 9th 2023, at Shinagawa Intercity Hall, the World Cup Award, 2 Excellence Award and 4 Honorable Judge Award have been determined through the final open judging.
Entry No.12 Plough the waves Team, Shanghai University (China)
In recent years, the occurrence of water traffic accidents is common, including the collision of two ships, capsizing and other phenomena, the main reasons are insufficient surface supervision, large ship flow, improper operation of the driver, and the water is not calm so that the ship deviates from the course. In order to improve the safety of water navigation, We put forward the digital twin sluice monitoring system to realize the real-time monitoring and prediction of sluice running state and reduce the occurrence of water traffic accidents.

Entry No.23 IFocus, Kookmin University (Korea)
Our project aims to develop a system that heightens driver focus and safety, utilizing an innovative approach to estimate a driver's gaze without a tracker. Initially, we use the UC-win/road simulator to collect gaze data and facial images, synthesizing bare face images. Through deep learning, these images facilitate the prediction of 3D gaze vectors, represented on a 2D simulator screen. Finally, merging bbox details with optical flow data enables object detection and trajectory forecasting, enhancing accident prediction accuracy. Critically, if the identified risk points are not within the driver's field of vision, a timely alert system activates to prevent potential accidents, emphasizing proactive safety.

Entry No.13 You Are My Eyes Team, Shanghai University (China)
For blind people, their world is a darkness, and their defense against things around them comes from sound. We used navigation glasses as a carrier and simulated the external information captured by the glasses using UC-win/Road software, providing users with auditory sensations and better perceiving external information. The blind population is constantly receiving attention in society, and the design of care for such groups is particularly important.

Entry No.18 MT Four, Sugiyama Jogakuen University (Japan)
There are 4.63 million people with a physical disability in Japan. To remove the barrier to driving for them, we developed a BMI system that enables them to drive a car according to their brain waves. Our approach comprises a client application and server plugin for UC-win/Road. The user with a BMI headset focuses on visual stimulation on the client application and selects an action for a car. The chosen action is transferred to the server plugin. The car in the UC-win/Road acts according to the received action. Our BMI-based system provides an enjoyable driving experience for people with disabilities.

Entry No.10 Skiller, Beihang University (China)
Based on UC-win/Road 15.1, we developed a bicycle simulator. By using the bicycle simulator, users can ride a bicycle equipped with data sensors in place to realize the riding movement in a virtual urban road traffic scene. The bicycle simulator consists of simulation software (UC-win/Road 15.1) and plug-ins, a bicycle, wireless router, four data sensors and image display screens. The sensor can collect the movement information of the bicycle in real time, and transmit the speed, steering and braking data to UC-win/Road 15.1, and control the movement of the bicycle in the virtual scene using the bicycle control plug-in.

Entry No.15 Real Never Give Up-Team, Beijing Jiaotong University (China)
We used the UC-win/Road SDK to develop an interface to send the driving vehicle information from UC-win/Road to SUMO(Simulation of Urban Mobility) in real time, and calculate the traffic flow information, such as the traffic flow cars' location, speed, angle, lane and so on in SUMO. At the same time, we can use the UC-win/Road SDK to receive the data from the information calculated in SUMO and build car models in UC-win/Road to do joint driving simulation. After that simulations in above two software, we can get the result from UC-win/Road and SUMO to generate the final result.

Entry No.9 Atarashii Gakko!, VinUniversity (Vietnam)
Atarashii Vision is an innovative plugin designed for UC-win/Road, aiming to revolutionize driving simulations. By harnessing the power of AI and computer vision, Atarashii Vision uses ordinary webcams to track users' head movements. This tracking allows the simulation to adjust its perspective in real-time, offering a dynamic and immersive 3D experience on standard 2D screens. With its efficient dlib predictor model, trained on 7,198 faces for optimal accuracy and speed, the software promises affordability and accessibility. Drivers can now delve into an enhanced driving experience without investing in pricey VR equipment or elaborate setups.

Entry No.17 FIVE, Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture (China)
Drowsy driving is among the most critical causes of fatal crash, however, for some reason, drowsy driving is hard to be strictly forbidden, sometimes driver don't even know they're performing drowsy driving. Therefore, it is important to warn the driver of their dangerous behavior. Plenty of studies have already observed clear evidence using electroencephalography that the brain’s rhythmic activities fluctuate from alertness to drowsiness. Our work aims to detect driver’s drowsiness through EEG data and sends out a warning sign to the driver and urge him to get some rest.

A variety of projects are proposed, such as those on facilities management and haptic devices. Works making use of XR advancements are expected.
On the 11th of July, the first round of online judging took place between Tokyo and Hanze University Groningen in the Netherlands. From a large number of applications from Japan and overseas, a total of 23 entry teams were selected. The entry teams are supposed to create and submit works, and the final judging and awards ceremony will be held at the Design Festival 2023-3Days in November after the advance nomination judging.
The problem definition for each project is particularly clear and interesting this year. While some teams are now working out the details, others are entering the programming phase. There are a number of transport and automotive related studies, but there are also some proposed projects dealing with facilities management and the use of haptic devices, and we can expect to see projects taking advantage of XR advances.
▲The 1st round screening was held on July 11th.
